How we keep Warm

Via Brenna’s Flickr:

Chase and I have been talking about what socks are the warmest.

Though he’d been loving the length of the Super Stripes, he became enamoured of the O Woolies (seen on him here in magenta) when I brought him some to try. However, after trying my O Marled (seen here in fawn*), he demanded a pair his own size. From tests out in the crazy deep snow we’ve been having he’s decided he likes the O Marled best.

*Actually, I think I’m wearing his pair. No wonder the feet seemed so big!
Now, before I go into the conversation that came from Brenna & Chase’s review I must warn you that our sock makers are doing their best to keep up with the fervent demand for our Dream Stockings, and nearly everything we are out of is being made or is on its way or will be…

Now, before we get to the resulting conversation, I must warn you that our sock makers have been working hard to keep up with the fervent demand for our Dream Stockings and we are out of at least a couple of things mentioned here…

amandathegreat says:
This is adorable and I love it. :D :D :D

B_Zedan says:
Chase is fully aware of his cuteness. When I showed him the final image and said “Look how cute these feet are!” he replied: “Yes, the purple ones at least.”

Laurel says:
*nod* I concur with Chase’s O Marled conclusion. Actually yesterday I had Diamond Ribs on underneath my O Marled, and I can report superior warmth.

B_Zedan says:
I wish my snow boots were bigger! I think the ultimate combo would be Cotton Slouches with Super Dreamys.

amandathegreat says:
This is why my tights-longsocks-double-legwarmer combo is perfect! Not too much bulk on the foot, and ultimate warmth on the legs!

B_Zedan says:
Exactly! The Chenille Warmers + LW120 is pretty much saving my poor legs as I keep going outside to trudge. I heartily recommend the LWs because the snow doesn’t want to seep into the acrylic, so they dry fast and don’t get soaked.
(My snowboots are also kind of pretty much too small anyhow)

Chase Allgood says:
forgive me, but . . .
DORKS

amandathegreat says:
Pot kettle.

niqkita says:
Um, sock journal review in order!
I’ve been layering either the Super Dreamies or Super & O marleds over MP cotton/wool or woolissimo, today it was both tights and little cashmere socks (B.ella’s, not yet on the site).

B_Zedan says:
I love that everyone has their system.

amandathegreat says:
I need some Woolissimos. I didn’t think I did. Nowadays I’m pretty sure I do.

Laurel says:
Today on the trek to the Post Office it was FT Tights + O Chevrons + O Marled + jeans = Warm & Toasty. Oh, and Cronert Striped Sleeves as well. :)
(…sorry, the Cronert striped sleeves are a store exclusive, for now)

ok so i think i love this post! all my favorite things and toes!
    1. omarled fawns are one of my fav socks ever! and i am very attracted to them as well. as in i think they are mighty sexy. but only this color does it for me for some reason.
    2. the owoolies just plain kick arse. and i have begun to give them to all my ppls up north of me.
    3. the diamond ribs are so soooo sexy cool yummy scumptious!
    4. yes, please invest in at least one pair of mp cotton/wool. i have one black pair that i have worn religiously this winter.

but one other sock i cannot do without in this weather are the ribbed m stocking. i dont know if any of you mentioned these maybe i missed it?? i love them! these are so great because they dont slouch off the foot during sleeptime. stay all the way up my leg over my knee keeping me toasty until i peel them off!

Sock Dreams: Staffed entirely with dorks.

  3. Sheila Says:

I love this post! I personally love both the O woolies and the O marled – but nothing beats my jambieres for warmth. If only I had more money! I can wear those thing out with nothing else and be warm.

  4. Sheila Says:

Oh, and our high temps where I live have been in the thirties lately (wind chills in the teens all day yesterday)

  5. Idigmusic Says:

Dang. Now I’m gonna need to buy more socks. Though I do have to say that I live in Wisconsin and it is cold. I adore the O Chevrons!! I wear mine all the time! They keep me super warm when I wear them under pants or over a pair of tights with a skirt. But I’mdefinitely gonna have to try out some of these other suggestions….

  6. bethany Says:

it’s the kind of cold here in maine where, when you go outside your nostrils stick together. it is most definitely owoolies time – i guess i need to invest in legwarmers for added layering power?

  7. Brenna Says:

Yes Raubynn! How could I forget the absolutely wonderful Ribbed M Stockings! I love them. They stay up even on my skinny chicken legs. Those are serious warm socks.

And yes, one (at least) good pair of legwarmers makes such a difference when it gets wicked cold out, they help trap that air and keep you warm. I’m super partial to the Foot Traffic Ribbed because they go easy over my jeans and slacks.

  8. niqkita Says:

yes, yes! Brenna & I were just discussing the ribbed Ms yesterday! particularly how high they go on our scrawny legs compared to how they fit our longer leggier friends lower on the thighs.
Two things I love most about this post, I accidentally learned how to put the rest of the post “under the cut” and will probably use this feature much more in the future. I also love the way the size just jumps out of that image…

  9. Susan Brill Says:

I’ve taken to wearing the long, cuffable, scrunchable socks or my sherbert stripes ( the sherberts are the perfect length- right between knee and thigh high) after swimming with the polar bear club (we are a bunch of freaks who swim in the ocean in winter). The peeps I swim with covet my socks. They warm me up super-fast!

  10. Laurel Says:

I love this photo *so* much. The socks and the feet and the love…

When I commented on the photo before, I had not yet tried the M Stockings. I just got my first pair last week, and they are truly rad. I wish I’d had them for the snow! They’re so stretchy and soft and comfy and warm… yes yes. I heart them. Good call, Raubynn.

  11. raubynn Says:

yayyyy!!! i got scared they werent loved! and i adore them! so try them! cuz they stay up thru any ice snow wind storm! and running in ones sleep too ;)
and thanks Sheila for the info on warmth of the jambieres – i might have to – sigh – actually let them go outside!! i am very strict with them and they have been so far confined to me just trying them on and staring at them. i worry about them getting ruined in any way. BUT if they are that warm i think they might have to do a days work after all!

little jlzzzz about all yall layering so many socks- if i layer more than a tight and a sock, my toes get weirdly/creepy pinned together and start getting claustrophobic so i will generally do the MP tights, M ribbed stockings and then a leg warmer to get another layer on the leg but not restrict my toes any further.

and uumm very green-eyed of Ms Niq learning how to post under the cut – always think that is a nifty thing on blogs.

  13. bethany Says:

arrrgh! now i”m going to have to place another order to get some legwarmers/tights & i got in trouble yesterday when my big order came in the mail – i got a phone call at work from my bf – he said “just WHAT did you order from that sock place that had to come in such a big box??” this time around i’m ordering him some boot socks so he can’t get mad, buwahahaha

oh, & then i can swipe them when he’s not wearing them. raubynn, it’s funny you said that about not letting your jambieres out of the house because that is exactly what i was thinking when i first saw them – i’d be scared to wear them anywhere in case they got ruined!

  14. Sheila Says:

Now I’m jealous – I want the ribbed M’s! (They won’t fit my big old thighs….sigh)

Raubynn and bethany, I wear myjambieres all of the time! I am constantly washing them so I can wear them again another day. They are just so warm and so cosy, and they don’t bind at all on my larger, longer legs.

I know they cost a lot of money, but I just don’t really see not wearing them outside. That’s the only reason I bought them! (I’m so incredibly cold-natured). If they get stained, well, they are just well loved and I’ll wear them anyway.

But if you didn’t want to chance them outside, they also make terrific bed socks!

  15. Brenna Says:

Chase with his 20″ calves likes the Ribbed Ms as scrunchy knee highs or less scrunchy OTKs. Luckily he prefers the M Bootsocks as his everyday choice, so I don’t have to worry about him stealing all my tall socks.

And Susan, the Long Cuffables make perfect sense for you Polar Bear Club crazies. :) Super cozy.

Raaubynn, I’m with you on toe-claustrophobia! It’s part of my long-standing love of footless and toeless styles. When it got crazy snowy and cold here I was wearing the Longer Ribbed Chenilles under my pants and the Foot Traffic Ribbed over because I could not handle the idea of one more layer confining my toes.

    Saturday Night, Awards Banquet:

Me: Are we driving or biking?
    Boyfriend: Biking.
Me: Oh, well then, I’ll just wear my formal leg warmers.
    Boyfriend: Formal … leg … warmers ???
Me: Well, I can’t wear my sporty ones to the banquet, can I?

It’s good to be a Sock Dreamer!

Hi. I just subscribed to the Sock Journal, and I just wanted to let you know that the post that came through my reader a couple of hours ago read “WDA SUCKS” over and over again.

    Hacked?

Just thought you’d like to know.

  18. niqkita Says:

Hacked and fixed, all within 3 minutes ~=)
We don’t believe it was specific to us, just someone utilizing a WordPress vulnerability. Upgrading, changed password and toes are crossed that it won’t happen again.

  19. niqkita Says:

Okay, this is weird, I have tried googling the above mentioned hack a couple of times since this happened and with just the keywords wda sucks, the top result was Alice’s blog, very curious indeed!

  20. Maryann Devine Says:

Glad it was easy to fix!

By the way, I’m a new customer and I loooove my socks. Esp Cronert Ribbed Wool OTK. It’s not all that cold in Philadelphia comparatively, but I’m sensitive to the cold, and these lovely socks help when I take my elderly dog out multiple times per day! They make me happy.

An actual letter, exactly as submitted…
since I cannot email her, I shall post it here:

Okay so like, this is not what i think of when i have a sock dream, ok? i mean rly what font is this site in anyway? its totally not readable. and second like, there are no sock contests? how can i ever hope to win ne free socks, since i cant afford these ones youre selling. u should like, consider an ‘economic slump’ section with actually affordable socks for regular people who wear socks like me.

Well, we do have a sale & clearance section with a lot of great deals, not to mention tons of socks that are reasonably priced and FREE SHIPPING. The font, last time I checked was Georgia, just a little rounder and friendlier than ariel & times, but not all fancy like comic sans or papyrus. Um, yeah, that is pretty much all I have to say to her. We had a good laugh and went on about our very busy days of dealing with real customers.

  22. Gabihime Says:

I have really poor circulation due to a heart condition that leaves me with chronically low blood pressure. I’m kind of used to my toenails and fingernails showing mild signs of cyanosis just because my body really can’t keep them warm unless I’m curled up like a beanpod in a blanket. I love socks and have always loved socks, but generally, even my warmest and comfiest socks don’t actually stop my feet from being cold. Usually they just keep my feet from getting colder, even after wearing them for hours. I had resigned myself to a hot bath being the only way to warm them up in some kind of timely fashion.

Then I ordered a pair of the thick and bulky bootsocks, put them on my feet and I believe I actually emoted exclamation points, because my feet started to warm up.

These socks have now completely replaced whatever house socks I was wearing before. I would totally recommend them to anyone looking for a comfy house sock, because they are so comfortable and not constraining and they allow my feet, which generate almost no warmth of their own, to warm up.

    Hurrah for warm feet!

  23. olivia Says:

AHAHAHAhahahahaha! Oh thats a CLASSIC Niq! Like, for realz.

Gabihime I totally agree! As someone who always has cold toes and fingers, even in the height of summer, those are just my best best most favourite pair. I absolutely must get more this Winter.

  24. niqkita Says:

Me too, I am a huge fan of the thick & bulky! super comfy, super warm. We’re clearing out the mediums right now because we found the smalls fit up to 9.5 -10 and that is where the large ones pick up. Next we’re hoping to bring in some new colors.

  25. Gabihime Says:

I am happy for new colors! I took advantage of your clear out and bought four more pairs, so now I have them in all the colors you carry XD. I fall inside the size overlap, natch, so now I have two pairs of smalls and four of mediums.

For socks to wear outside of the house I am slowly going through all the different varieties of your OTK Dream stockings. I love having so many colors and thread contents to choose from. I love the long cuffables :D

  26. bethany Says:

i was under the impression only abnormal people wore socks….

hahahaha good response niquita, please don’t tell me that was a real email = )
