M Squared

Love them or leave them

Msquared at work
I was walking around the warehouse last week taking the pictures for why the building isn’t green. And there she sat, outside the side door on her lunch-break, wearing these super cute shoes, she adorned them with lace herself, and one of the buttons was knocked off when she as hit by a car recently (don’t worry, she is fine, thankfully!). Laura is one of many fun sock lovers working among us here at Sock Dreams and I was happy to see her back at work, and wearing one of my favorites. But are they other people’s favorites? it seems some people do not like them and find them too thin, or think they fall down too easily. And since we are currently out we wondered, should we get them back? I think so, I really like mine, maybe we just need to describe them better? It will be so nice when the day comes that we can have customer comments & feedback right there with the items in a special section (that time is coming!) I know we really do have more on their way this time…
but what if we really did discontinue them?
…would you miss them?

ok truth time here….but lets first get the OMG HIT BY A CARRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!! please, have no lasting injuries!!!! besides the button – which isnt necessarily lasting and certainly fixable if needed – although, i think it not being there is kinda a nice memory to the horrid incident – and darling percious shoes!

well, i must say i was very excited initially about the MSquares…because they were supposed to fit guys as well and and the boys socks medium fit and everything about them i find absolutely perfect….but something about them just wasnt right for me….and now i wish i had journalled somewhere why or what exactly it was because it now eludes me….but i gave them away to a little girl who loves socks…..i think partially to blame was that i chose pink for some reason which i really should never do but sometimes the color just calllllllssssss….sadly it can never stay because it does terrors on me…..i dont know….perhaps i might should give these another go….i will wait and see what everyone else says….maybe it will refresh what it was that wasnt right for me….besides the pink.
p.s. the A Chevrons dont fit exactly like i like i dont know why except i thought maybe the thicker knitting or the different texture from the pattern….the boy socks in medium are the ideal perfect fit for me….the absolute perfect fit for me for some reason…..

  2. Cheryl Says:

I only have one pair, in Dk Red, and I love them. I had planned on getting more pairs, only two though, which I hope to get the chance to do. I do personally love them, however, I can see easily how others might not, particularly for anyone with even slightly larger legs than mine. I would think they might be more appealing to others if they were a bit longer, bigger feet, and could stretch wider. I’m fine with their fit, but I’m only one small size of quite a variable range.

For me, literally, my only complaint is that I wish they came in a few more colors. (Grey, Olive would be lovely, but I know they can’t for the same reason the OChevvies aren’t available in Olive, perhaps Dk Brown, Red.)

Actually, while I’m on colors, I have a question about the Hunter, because I was thinking these MSquared would be lovely in Hunter. Awhile ago, I bought the Hunter M43s, and I love them. Later, I bought the Hunter OBasics, but the color is not quite the same. It seemed brighter, more vivid, perhaps with a hint more blue in it? From the picture of the Cuffables in Hunter, that looks same as the Hunter of the OBasics I had, which doesn’t look like the picture on the OB. page; that picture matches closer to the color of my M43s. So, was there a slight change in the color of the yarn used? I really like the color of my M43s because it seems a rich, true green, and makes me think of a dense forest of leaves. But I’m not that fond of the brighter, slightly more bluish color.

Sorry that was so long and drawn out, I have a slight compulsion to be meticulous in detail. lol.

  3. EG Says:

I really like the idea of these…
the pattern is great, the contrasting heel and toe areas are wonderful…
    but-
for my larger and longer feet/legs they came up just a bit short on both ends. I still wear them, and like them, but am always wishing they were a bit “more”.

I would ADORE these to be longer both in the foot and length, but if that isn’t possible, I wouldn’t throw a temper tantrum to see them replaced with a different style. :O)

  4. Amanda Says:

I’d love them if they stretched wider. As is my calves barely make it; much larger than me wouldn’t fit them at all.

  5. Petula Says:

I’m not really crazy about the pair that I own. I have average sized calves, but the socks are quite snug. The design gets distorted and it’s rather unflattering.

  6. Piperlou Says:

I wasn’t aware of size issues with these :(!

My main issue was that none of the colors stood out to me in particular, so while I was eager to try the M Squared, I couldn’t pick which one (or two)!

I definitely agree that a hunter green pair would be very appealing though…

  7. Kitsy Says:

I would miss them because they look so wonderful and I’ve yet to buy a pair! I’d be devastated if I had missed out on my chance at such fun socks!

  8. Jamie-Lynn Says:

Ditto to Piperlou’s comment. I wanted to try them but never found a color that I NEEDED to have.

  9. SB Says:

I own a pair in charcoal, and the only thing that stops me buying again is that they’re too short (they are snug, but it’s not a problem for me). They’re the shortest knee highs I own. I like the length of things like the O Basics and O Chevrons. I’m only 5′4″, but those two make perfect knee highs.

If you got rid of them, I can almost see the O Lovelies taking over. They’re nothing alike, yet there’s something sorta waffle like about both socks. The Lovelies are like M Squareds more girly, taller, sexier city cousin. If they came in all the darker colours M Sqaureds come in that would be awesome.

  10. Babylon Says:

I like them ok, I have them in white, lime, bubblegum and the elusive black with white squares :D I gave a pair to my mom too because she liked the pattern

  11. Eva Says:

I like mine, even if the feet are a little long on me. But I think I would like them better if they were just a little longer.

  12. shelleopard Says:

I love mine, but I hate that I can’t pull them up past right above my ankles. I wear them a LOT anyway, especially in summer here!

  13. Rebeckah Says:

I only buy otks unless a KH really thrills me, and these didn’t. If they were longer, as in otk, then I’d buy them.

  14. jane Says:

these are the only socks i would never order again. they’re very difficult to even fit over my feet and flat out hurt. i wear a size 9 1/2 and my feet and ankles aren’t particularly big or wide, but the fact that it makes them throb in pain is a major turn off.

they’re absolutely the worst fitting socks i’ve ever encountered.

  15. Sena Says:

In order to procrastinate work I decided to tally the responses thus far:
    A. Among current owners:
5 people didn’t like them much, and all but one cited their strech/length as the issue
5 people liked them enough, but of them 3 were displeased with length and/or limited color options.

    B. Among non-owners:
    1 person wanted them
3 people considered them but either didn’t find an irresistible color or didn’t like the length.

I was considering these but I too couldn’t find a color I must have. And now the overall message I’m getting is that they only fit a small range of feet/calves and leave many others wishing they were “more” as EG said.
Still, the idea behind them seems so very cute. The waffle pattern does resemble the O Lovelies, which IMO are a swanky sock indeed and a great value! They make my legs look and feel sophisicated and so I must join those who wished they came in more colors. And a bit longer =).

  16. Alex Says:

i have them in grey and i love them, except they got toe-holes after only a handful of wearings. if they were thicker or sturdier, that would be a big plus.

  17. niqkita Says:

    Great job Sena!
You’ve placed a lot of orders with us, so…
out of curiosity, what is (are) your fav(s) and why?

  18. Sena Says:

Oh… Thanks for letting me indulge my obsession =)
First a quick caveat: I always seem to be clamoring for more length, even with my favorites. (I’m a true Miss Rebeckah follower.) But here goes it:
For Dressy looks the Cronerts reign supreme for their quality and simplicity (soft, stretchy, stay up, and still look like new after many washes) and the O Lovelies for their sleek sophistication and unusual weave (they look like expensive socks, like something out of my BCBG catalog. They say: “Don’t use foul language around us!”). For Casual looks I like the Super Basics (basic but comfy and versatile) and my black Cuffables (cute whichever way I fold them). For lounging at home I adore my Khaki Super Dreamies. They tend to be attracted to my ankles a lot but I’ll forgive them anything for their softness. They feel like one hundred bunnies hugging my legs! Lastly, for conversation-starter socks I like the Ozone eyeballs [(for their colorful eyeballs =)]

And if this is relevant and/or helpful, this post (inspired by your question) also lists my leg measurements: http://community.livejournal.com/socks_fun/161656.html

Sorry this ended up so long. It’s getting easier and easier to get carried away about socks. Signs of an addiction worsening, lol.

  19. raubynn Says:

you know i wonder – just to wonder….if o’lovelies could be made in a cotton blend….

  20. Rebeckah Says:

hehehehee Sena I KNEW you were gonna say those Cronerts! & they look so good on you too. :) I am indeed a long sock lover & am so anticipating the thigh high Hot Sox. I can’t believe the cashmere otks are OOS already! WOW. I guess that’s what I get for waiting. Are you getting more of those in by any chance Niq? & are the Trump garters adjustable?

  21. raubynn Says:

Rebeckah – the reason i tried out the cashmere OTKs was due to all your kind words on them….

  22. Elizabeth Says:

The M squared are too short for me as well–I’ve never tried them, but I prefer thigh high.

After reading Sena’s post I’m tempted by the Cronerts. Hey CHERYL (sorry for yelling!), do you own them? If so, how do they fit you? I also didn’t know the super dreamies were so soft!

I’ve said it before, but I really like the fit of the Super Basics. I wish some of the heavier thigh highs (cuffables) came in sized feet. The cuffables are not as snug around the ankles as I’d like. Maybe more stretch in the thicker thigh highs? (Sorry, I know that’s totally off-topic!)

While I’m totally off-topic, will we see Super Woolies any time soon??

  23. Rebeckah Says:

I vote for small footed cuffables! I tried to shrink mine in the dryer because the foot was HUGE on me & the whole thing shrunk so severely I can’t wear them at all & the foot was still too big.

Raubynn so what’s your opinion on the otk cashmeres? I’d love to hear. :))))

  24. Kay Says:

I’m loving all this sock-talk! And to put my two-cents in about my favourite socks, I LOVE my Super Dreamys for comfort. I sleep in them when I’m cold. I also like the O Yummies for their softness. I also like those two styles for my curvy thighs, although the Yummies only make it up to just about mid-thigh with no cuff. I tend to avoid anything that might be too small on my thighs, which is sad because so many of the thigh-high styles are so narrow.

  25. raubynn Says:

hot sox OTK cashmere: come up above my knees and stay there- from the bottom of my heel to my knee is like 21 in…fit my size 10 foot perfectly… fit snuggly around my leg (my calf is like about 13in around) and i am much more of a fitted sock/stocking than a baggy/slouch person… fit maryjanes nicely and of course are snuggly soft. they have a more socky look then a thin hosiery thing going on which is nice in the cold weather and also for layering over my newest very fav thing ever created EVER – the bamboo tights….
so i like these fine yes i do! plus i adore the nice fiber blend on these and Hot Sox i have come to find seem to fit me beautifully….i mean you and Niq of slender gams and petite toes trick me sometimes and i must be cautious because the fit of things on you two is so gorgeous and i shove my foot into the same thing and the look is TOO SMALL…but Hot Sox really fits so nicely….i.e. the cat socks, the sushi socks, the cashmeres, the alpacas (which i think are gone forever)….their prices are great, their quality is great and like i said i love their fiber blends.
yes i too am holding my breath on those thigh highs from hot sox…

  26. niqkita Says:

Ohhh, sooo much going on here! I love seeing this, but now I have so much to answer to I’m sure to lose track…
We finished shooting the Hot Sox today and got about half-way through the MPs. If all goes well, we’ll finish tomorrow. It’ll take me at least the next couple of weeks to get them all edited since the after-Halloween lull barely happened this year ~:D and there is so much to do that I can barely think straight by the time I get home at night (and I am sooo not complaining because it is so fun and we have a really great team now, the holidays this year are not going to kill me like they usually do, but I will be tired!).
anywayz… I have to ask about the O Lovelies coming in cotton, I know there was a good reason for doing it with acrylic, I’ve just lost track of what that was, not sure how the wool supply is holding out, but I think there might be enough to do Super Woolies this year. Most of the big sock makers came out with at least one wool over the knee and some even did a thigh high (soon you’ll know which). I don’t think longer is the answer with the M2s as they barely go up so many legs that I just don’t think trying to make them go over the larger parts of our legs is a good thing.
No, the Trump garters are not adjustable, I am not happy with them to be honest, they stretch great, don’t get me wrong, but when I ordered them I was under the impression they’d come in pairs, they didn’t, but we got a nice refund when we pointed it out. And they didn’t send our full order so they will not be restocked when we run out. I am working on some more sock garter options though and…
Virtual Gift cards are coming really soon, like any time now!!! Gift invoices too (that we won’t have to manually modify on request, it’ll just happen when you check a box in the check out!!!) plus we’ll be requiring people who use the contact us form to type in some words to verify they are real humans (hated to do that but hated sifting through hundreds of spams a day more)…

  27. niqkita Says:

Oooh, I know what I missed! the Hot Sox cashmere OTKs, yes, more on order, lots more… I can hardly believe how many we went through in like two weeks, and do not yet know if they can fill our orders, but I put in an extra big order for them ~:)

  28. Elizabeth Says:

With all the accolades for the super dreamies, can you let us know when the khaki will be back in stock? I hear it’s softer than some of the others!

Also, I’m sure this is an annoying question, but when would a thigh high wool sock be available (either SD’s own or from one of the big sock makers)?

I’m wearing black O woolies right now, and they are so cozy warm! My toes are very happy on a gray, blustery day!

  29. Sena Says:

Oh FYI, Liz you’re absolutely right – the Khaki are the ones to get. I also have them in Autumn and they’re still soft but not nearly as soft and fuzzy as the Khaki. On the other hand because they’re closer to a flat knit, they are a bit easier to dress up and wear out.

  30. Amanda Says:

We’ve had some Khaki ones on order for a few weeks now but it’s hard to say when we’ll actually get them in. The Dream Stockings are a little hectic right now!

  31. Sena Says:

    WOOOOO HOOOO THEY’RE HERE!!!!! =)))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Two pairs of Hot Sox THs are coming my way!!! And lucky me lives the next state over so I shall have them early next week! I’m soooo happy. =))))))))))))))

  32. raubynn Says:

i got mine too!!!!!!got black thigh highs!!!!!!!!!! and of course HAD TO HAVE those button up warmers!!!!!!!
wooooohoo fun lots of new things…
and one of my top 10 very fav things was in clearance too!! the back seamed fishnet knee highs…..sorry to see them leave but i grabbed a couple of those as well….

  33. Amanda Says:

The button-up warmers are SO soft and warm and wonderful and super freakin’ cute over jeans or socks or just on their own. I love them so much. I’m betting as the weather gets colder they and I will be more and more inseparable.

  34. Rebeckah Says:

YAY! More cashmeres are coming! I swooped up 2 pairs of TH hot sox as well and surprised (not really) that the Naomis & Kimis are selling out. We all love new otks! yay! I had to get the Angora Cable Knee Highs too. I just can’t resist me the fuzzy soft ones. teehees.

also is the black super long cable leg warmers marled like the charcoal & burgandy colours are, or is it a flat plain colour like how the ivory are? Thanks.

  35. Amanda Says:

The black Super Long Cable Leg Warmers are flat colored, and not as, well, hairy as the charcoal and burgundy are.

  36. raubynn Says:

gggrrrrrrrrrrrrrr….dang it….i forgot a ton of things including angora knee highs…thank you for the bump on the brain Mz R…….i need to do one of them wish list thingies…..

  37. EG Says:

    BLACK SUPER LONG LEG WARMERS????!!!!???

    OMG… I didn’t know…

I’m beside myself with joy :O)

  38. Kitsy Says:

With all of these amazing raving reviews, my socklist just got that much longer, and it’s already 32 items long. Good news is, my fiance has long since resigned himself to the fact that he has a girl who rejoices when she gets a box full of socks for Christmas. He has also resigned himself to the concept of a sock tub or two in the closet (or else a whole sock dresser). Now I really just need to convince myself to quit buying so much luxurious yarn (because my legwarmer fantasies almost always turn out as scarves instead) so that I can buy more socks!

  39. Lynae Straw Says:

I have a Bubblegum pair of the M Squares and I really love them…the feet are a teeeeny bit loose on my 6.5 feet but much better than many others, and other than that they fit GREAT and stay up really well. I was initially a little disappointed when I got them and discovered that over most of my calves, the squares kind of disappear and turn into pinstripes, but then I decided they look good that way too.

I’d like to see M Squares that are maybe made more similarly to the InkLineds, which seem to hold their pattern better, but I would definitely like to keep them around in some form or another!

  40. Angelwings Says:

I really like these socks. I would love to see them longer and in bolder colors, like peacock blue, or an kelly green, perhaps with a black or white squares. I love the idea and concept, but it would be much more sexier longer since since its little squares it creates more of a cut off look if they end up reaching right under the knee for you.

How about the chevron or vertical lines length. Those seem to be uber popular, these guys seem a kin to those. And its really hard to turn those down *because of color choice and over all appearance* when compared to these.

If anything, I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the *snug looking socks.* XD I’d buy more if I made more money lol.

  41. Jill Says:

these need to be resized. my pink & black pair wear like mid-calves, not knee-highs. my legs are long but not crazylong! also it bothers me how the squares disappear as they stretch out. i really love most of y’all’s merch but these are a dud. :(

  42. Miss Fae Says:

Please dont discontinue them. I finally wore out my pair and plan to order a few more pairs. They’re my favorite socks and I cant get enough of them. I wore them out! AMAZING! FABULOUS! I would be ever so sad

  43. niqkita Says:

as would I! …they are absolutely one of my fav’s. But we have a stretchier version coming!!! I’ve not yet tried them, I’ve heard good things from those who have though and am eager to try a pair or two myself next week, stay tuned…
