Spring Dreams

This pretty new Marabou anklet arrived shortly after a gorgeous bouquet of French Parrot Tulips for Daffodil. The huge blooms hung heavily over their vase on the ledge between or desks begging to be photographed. A day or so later their bright yellow pollen began tumbling down and irritating my assistant’s touchy sinuses so I carried them out to a bright spot in the yard and realized it was a perfect setting for the new marabous we sort-of-accidentally got to be shot.
Liz has been cleaning up the text on the site, correcting my punctuation and grammer when time allows. Not here in the journal obviously ~;) anyways, she made a suggestion that at least a few others have: feature socks that are good for spring/summer weather. Back before the site got all fancy I simply rotated the ankets and bootie socks to the top of the main socks page and rearranged each section to show the lightest first. Now the main sock section lists styles alphabetically so anklets & bootie socks are always on top. But for technical coding reasons that are beyond me we can’t currently arrange the socks within the sections perfectly (this is on a list to fix). What we can do is add it to the quick search list. My questions for you all are: what do we call them in the list? cool socks? lightweight? summer? and, of course, which socks do we put there? And finally, are socks for hot weather (Southern California, Arizona, Texas, ect.) an entirely different quick search listing?

I think we should call them warm weather socks. And include fishnets.
March 29th, 2007 at 8:11 pm
yeah, that’s a perfect description, I was hoping for a shorter one or two words for the list though, not sure what it will look like if I put all that in for quick search.
Fishnets, lace, crochet, M Squared, O Chevrons….

wow… that’s hard… when I lived in Texas I wore OTKs mainly as either the weather or the AC made for cold legs. Now that I live in Michigan I’m mainly wearing anklets with warmers. But I think we’ve already established I’m a weirdo, so maybe I’ll abstain on this one? 8-)

I would think “lightweight” or “summer socks” should do the trick. I actually have my personal sock wishlist divided into “light/thin” and “thick/long” for the different seasons.
March 30th, 2007 at 5:07 am
How about lt weight & med weight. Under lt weight put all open knit and fishnets. Under med weight put all flat knits that are not thick and would not be hot if worn in 70 degree weather. Anklets and shorter would not need to be included in either list cuz we all know they are good for warm weather.

Are you going to carry the MP wool cotton lined tights this fall?
March 30th, 2007 at 7:55 am
Question: Are the out-of-stock items still on the clearance page just there to tease or will there be more of them in the future? :)
March 30th, 2007 at 8:15 am
I like lightweight & midweight. That is exactly the conundrum I’ve been having and that anklets by nature fit that without having to all be included. Even if there are some mighty warm anklets ~;)
Most likely yes to MP wool for fall, though I thought we’d have them last fall and only got leggings (long story short I over-ordered last fall and missed a few)
Out of stock items just haven’t been removed from clearance. There will be more things added, different things.
Thanks all!!!

We have some very cool stuff coming up for the clearance section. Liz will be working on them today, and hopefully they’ll be up in the next few days.
Happy Petticoat Friday from those of us working today!

Petticoat Friday? My curiosity is sparked…
March 30th, 2007 at 11:04 am
Most of us wear petticoats on Fridays, just for fun.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
Janey, what does a girl wear over a petticoat if anything. I want the purple layered tulle petticoat. Aside from deciding if I’m too old to wear one, I must decide how to style it. Please offer some insight.
March 30th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
It depends on where you’re wearing your petticoat. If you’re wearing it to the club, just make sure you’ve got something pretty under it, like our Rhumba briefs! If you’re thinking of wearing it in a less libertine environment, then with a full skirt over it. It can be hard to find a skirt full enough, but spring/summer is the best time to find them.
As for too old, my personal opinion is that attitude is way more important than age in terms of “getting away with it”.

I think “summer” is a good one, it might strike people’s attention better. I was thinking of two different ways it could be incorporated. Either make a category of “lt.weight/summer”, because I think seeing the word “summer” just might grab the attention easier than the word “lightweight” alone. Or make a separate category just for “summer” and include only the socks for when it really is hot, which I would suggest just lightweight anklets (and midcalves? fishnets?) and not even styles like the O Chevrons and M Squared, I think even those are too warm when it really is hot and especially humid. I have tried the O Chevrons in summer and sometimes it was too hot, so I just had to go with anklets. The M Stripes Knee Highs are a nice one for when it’s warm, but again, not when it’s really hot. Basically, sometimes lightweight material just isn’t enough when the temperature’s quite high, and even more so when the humidity is high.
Will there ever be more color combinations for the Super Stripes Knee Highs?
March 30th, 2007 at 3:17 pm
We do not plan to add any more colors to the Super Knees any time soon, sorry. Maybe someday! Right now Liz is concentrating on getting everything stocked up, and maybe getting in s few new lovelies….

If you like it wear it, and when you do… wear it any way you like it :O)
Petticoats are one of my favorite ‘make you feel pretty’ things. I love having rivers of lace pooling around me when I sit down, and the little flirty bounce the ruffles give you when you walk. I personally think that despite what the fashion world might have us believe, that we should wear what we wear to please overselves … not those looking at us.
what is too old? who gets to choose? 29? 42? 54? 63? 100? oh there must be a chart with the cut off date on when we are no longer allowed to wear the fun stuff huh? (wouldn’t that be horrible)
My niece recently said to me that she didn’t look forward to getting old cause she just didn’t like the clothes that older women had to wear. I couldn’t believe that she seemed to feel it was required to wear dowdy clothing at a certain age (fearful of her response, I didn’t ask her what she thought that age was). I tried to explain to her that there was no rule that you ever have to dress any certain way because of what is expected of you at any particular age.. and that when you hit an age like say 40 it doesn’t mean that you suddenly start craving a pair of too short polyester pants, sensible shoes, and a T shirt with kitties and rhinestones on it. I didn’t like polyester pants at 10, still didn’t like em at 20, no change at 40, and I’m convinced I’ll feel no different at 100 (but heck, if any point in my life I happen to begin liking them, then I’d wear them with pride… I just don’t think that age should dictate that decision I think personal taste should).
I wish more people would feel comfortable in allowing themselves to wear what makes them happy regardless of any age/sex/situation requirements that society tries to make them conform to.
I want to wear my high top cons, my fishnets, petticoats, thigh high sockies, MC jacket, hippy goth dresses, pigtails, shocking colored hair, and whatever the heck else strikes me happy for as long as I’m still kicking and I reserve the right to change my mind about what I like whenever I do.
Sorry guys… didn’t mean to go off about that, I just feel so strongly about being able to decorate our bodies in whatever style makes us smile, and hate that we (myself included) often hesitate… fearing judgement when considering things we really want. Whenever I debate if I am “too old” for something I really desire to wear (or if it is too ‘out of style’ or too wild, or too whatever in the eyes of someone else), these are the arguments I give to myself.
Brandy… I hope you get yourself that petticoat, and I hope that you’ll share with us a beautiful picture of you wearing it with pride… that would make my day :O)
PS… Love the idea of petticoat fridays!! I love petticoats and adore Fridays too… I think I’ll join you in petticoat fridays even though I’m all the way over here in nyc.
Okies.. I’ll be quiet now :O)
March 30th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
see, I think location has a bit to do with it as well. In NYC and Portland no one is likely to look at you odd for wearing anything out of the norm, or anything at all for that matter, but when in a smaller or less open-minded area it may be harder, not impossible, but you’d surely be more likely to stand out in a crowd for being yourself. At least that has been my experience and may affect the ability of more timid people to wear what they enjoy…
March 30th, 2007 at 3:42 pm
I agree.
I get fewer judgemental comments/looks here in the city then when traveling in the neighboring states.
I just wish it wasn’t so… anywhere.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:03 pm
I live in NYC. I work in an office where there is no official dress code. I’m in the fashion district but my office isn’t very fashionable. My omarleds and simone’s striped arm warmers have been a source of controversy around here with the older ladies. Luckily my boss likes them so I don’t have to change anything. Thanks for the pep talk EG.
March 30th, 2007 at 4:50 pm
INDEED!! But people are quite petty and ignorant about those who appear “different” and don’t follow the conventions and norms. People in America are taught, thanks to our fine Puritanical–ever notice how much that sounds like tyrannical?–heritage, to be suspicious of those who are “different”. Now, I realize that throughout history, human beings have had “issues” with those who are different, and such issues have caused way too many wars. When the hell are they ever going to learn from history? (Ugh, probably never, it requires knowing and thinking about history and all of the mistakes made.)
It seems so obvious that it wouldn’t take much brain power and rational thought to simply come to the realization that a person’s appearance generally does not provide enough information about that person at all. Unfortunately, most people are too intellectually lazy, and in many cases, some political agendas benefit by getting people to make such judgments of others based on senseless convictions about how they are “different”. *cough-cough* Is it too much to ask people to simply think for themselves and think rationally? Probably. :(
Hmm…sorry I’ve ended on a bit of a negative note, I admit I don’t have much in the way of positive and hopeful feelings about the overall general public. So much goodness could be had if people could be rational and reasonable in the simplest of ways. *sigh*

On a happier note. The signs of Spring are all around us. I love the early daylight savings time this year. Peace and Good will to all my fellow Socknistas & Socknistos :)!
March 30th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
Maybe you should just make a category called “Seasonal Socks” and change it every few months? And then when holidays approach, the holiday-specific socks could be in there, and for winter and summer you could put in the warmest and coolest styles respectively, and that sort of thing.
March 30th, 2007 at 9:19 pm
The “seasonal socks” thing sounds good for holidays, but I don’t know about for weather…it’s definitely not hot all over the world at the same time, and I don’t know how far away some of Sock Dreams’ customers are!
As far as dressing differently, I think part of the reason some people stand out in a crowd is because the human brain is SO good at recognizing patterns and then things that don’t fit those patterns. Really it’s a mental “shortcut”–if you had to process everything you can see all of the time, you’d never get anything else done, so your brain has to “tune out” a certain amount of stuff that is familiar or the same. BUT I don’t think we should look down on people who like to dress differently than the crowd! I don’t have the guts (or the waistline) to be wearing a petticoat, but it would make me smile to see someone else doing so =)

I kinda like the term “summerweight” myself. Though that isn’t really a word, I think… maybe that adds to its charm for me ; )
April 1st, 2007 at 6:59 am
after reading this wonderful thread i think i am going with “seasonal”….kind like when mama would change out the clothes in the closet….
and actually (working in a building with a dress code) i feel blessed that i can show some of my personality by my sock & shoe choices….it’s about the only area where you can break out.
