I haven't had that problem with more than one pair. One thing that tends to help (and I half plan to post about this soon) is washing everything inside out. Our newest rep gave me a simple explanation of whyt that works so well...
when washing in a machine the centifugal force of the spin causes all threads to head outward, this is bad if they are rightside out, but inside out the strings have no where to go. I invested in a nice front loading set and that is the only reason I now trust so many different socks in together, it is so much more gentle to them ~:) I really wanted a new fridge, but our old washer & dryer sucked sooo very badly...

I wash all my socks by hand in the bathtub. We have commercial dryers that either simulate the fires of hell, {or air fluff which leaves things wet}. so If I put things in the dryer they'll shrink waaaay up.... great for the big M40 feet, but bad for the ink lined as I tragically found out. :( I also had colours run into my LegAvenue nylons. So those 2 things and having to haul heavy laundry half a mile to the laundry room. BAH! I can do it in my tub & have actually found things getting cleaner when I wash them by hand since they soak overnight. ;) running colours is why all I wear is black. Life is easier in black. ;)

I've had a little trouble with the thread at the top, too. I wash all my socks inside out. I have one pair of Ribbed Ms that have no elastic to speak of at the top anymore. But most of them hold up fine.

aw Steev, that's a bummer. Can you use the kitchen sink instead?.... I didn't know that about the centrifical force, that's interesting... & star, my ex-cat taught me to hide in a pile of clothes right out of the dryer. It is heavenly warm! Cats have such good ideas about what feels good. ;)

i hand-wash all of my socks. i got into the habit of hand-washing because my husband wears knee-high wool socks that must be handwashed. so since i'm already washing his, i go ahead and wash mine. we even have a special basket for socks that need to be washed.

Whenever I machine wash my M40s, and to a lesser extent, the Super Stripes, the stretchy elastic thread at the very tops seems to get pulled and tangled and I end up having to snip off what was yanked out. Does anyone else have this problem? A car accident has made it rather painful to hunch over a bathtub for hand washing. Can I save my socks?

I usually wash all my light coloured ones together(excluding white, because the natural bleeds a little bit) and then I have to find other clothes to wash the other darker colours with, or on their own by hand, then I have to enlist dad to squeeze the water out of the larger socks because my hands are too small lol

one fashionably tragic year in highschool (early 80s) I managed to pick out all purple with what little school clothes budget I was allowed and didn't touch purple again for years. But I have been able to enjoy it again for quite awhile now.
The fuzzy things right in front of the lens are my fleece tabis
