Socks By Leg Coverage

Thigh Highs - Coming well past your knees, thigh highs are super comfy and often sexy, sometimes requiring the assistance of garter belts to keep them all the way up.

Leg Warmers - Like socks, but without the feet: leg warmers have long been a necessity for dancers, but they have grown much more popular in recent years, allowing for a great range of styles and colors!

Toe Socks - Toe socks hug each toe individually, giving you superior comfort and balance. They do not require any extra room in your shoes, either.

Knee Highs - Socks that usually reach to, or just under your knees. Some may land over the knees on smaller legs, while others make great midcalves on curvier calves. Some knee highs are also trouser socks : thinner, tube-style socks that are great to wear with dress shoes.

Over The Knee - Also known as OTKs, Over The Knee socks reach past your knees, but not quite to your thighs, and include some of the sexiest, comfiest styles around.

No-Shows & Liners - For when socks are too much! No-shows hide well beneath most shoes, for a sockless look without sacrificing comfort. Half socks , also known as "clog socks" or "slide socks", cover only the tips of your feet. Liners are there to protect your feet from your shoes. All are perfect with loafers, open-toe or slip-on shoes, and clogs. Give your toes some protection and absorbency with a minimum of sock. Half socks can also add a little extra comfort when worn under fishnet styles!

Footie Socks - Also known as booties or sneaker socks, these cover your feet but don't go much past your heels. Perfect for hiding in shoes or sleeping in!

Anklets - Also known as ankle socks, crew socks or quarter crews, anklets go just up to your ankle, sometimes folding or cuffing over. Just a few inches shorter than midcalves , they are a sock wardrobe essential-- everyone should have at least a few pairs in their collection!

Niqkita's Stash - Once upon a time, I had a few all-time favorite socks... Now that I've bought more socks than I can possibly count and have tried nearly every style ever sold by Sock Dreams, I thought it would be fun to share my favorites. So here they are: the socks I not only own, but really do like to wear... not always as often as I want to, since there are ever more socks to try!

Plus Sized - Voluptuous legs and curvy calves, worry not! We've got you covered, and we're adding more plus size socks all the time. These styles have all been tested by Dreamers large and small for fit and comfort. We know shapes and sizes vary as much as fingerprints, so we do our best to test everything out when it arrives and give you all the info we can: foot size, calf stretch, top stretch, length... Please see the sizing tips on individual products for specific information, and remember that if you’re having trouble finding the right size for you, we’re only an email away ! Just tell us your measurements and the styles you’re looking for, and we’ll be happy to help.
How can something that says “One Size” be “Plus Size”? When you see “One Size” on our site, we don’t mean “One Size Fits All”. Generally, we mean there’s only one size available. It’s actually very reasonable to look at a product labelled as “One Size” and think “One Size Fits All.” It’s a phrase that’s all too common and very untrue!

Knowing this, we carefully measure our styles (and re-measure and test based on product changes and your feedback!) to give you as much information as we can in the Sizing Tips on each product page. That’s why you’ll see some plus size socks listed as “one size”, they may only be available in one size, but it’s one stretchy size!
How we categorise plus size socks Clothing sizes, weight and height don’t mean much when it comes to proper sock fitting. Think of all the times you’ve seen a particular dress size run the range from too small to too large between different brands! And every body is built differently; two folks can be the same height and weight but can have totally different leg shapes.

So, for our plus size sock section , we use strict minimum stretch limits based on our experience to offer a range of plus size options. Of course, there’s still a lot to look through, so if you’re feeling frustrated or overwhelmed, check your measurements ( this guide on our Sock Journal has tips on what is most useful) and email us with that info and what kind of styles you’re looking for. We love helping people find the perfect socks!
Knee High Plus Size Socks For us to consider something a plus size knee high it needs to have a calf stretch of at least 17 inches. We know that’s on the small end of the plus size spectrum, but it’s also the size where it starts to get pretty frustrating to find socks that fit.

Legs that are long and full may want to check out over the knee socks, which make great knee highs (and are especially cute with the tops cuffed if they’re too long).
Over the Knee Plus Size Socks Over the knee (OTK) socks are sort of a strange height, because for some legs they’re basically knee socks and for others they’re totally thigh highs! But for plus size over the knee socks we look for a maximum stretch of 22-23 inches in the cuff of the sock.
Thigh High Plus Size Socks and Stockings When it comes to thigh high plus size socks and stockings , we want a stretch of 24 inches in the cuff. Now, remember, this is the minimum stretch. We have styles with more stretch, including our Extraordinary socks, which have at least 26 inches of stretch in the cuff. And plus size socks that are more like stockings (fishnet, nylons, etc), tend to have even more stretch, up to and over 30 inches for some styles!
Plus Size Tights and Leggings With plus size tights and leggings things can get complicated, there are a lot of variables between your toes and your waist! But we make sure that tights and leggings have a hip stretch of at least 40 inches and a waist stretch of 35 inches before they’re added to the plus size category.

We know it can be super frustrating to find the right plus size socks so we really encourage you to get your measurements and email us so we can help you out!

Tabi - Tabi socks, or split-toe socks, have been worn in Japan since the sixteenth century, reaching their peak popularity during the Edo period (1600-1868). They were developed to wear with sandals & wooden clogs called geta. There is a special place for your big toe. Lots of people wear tabi socks: martial artists practicing Aikido or Karate, Taiko drummers, Suzuki actors, and traditional Japanese folk dancers, just to name a few! According to Shiatsu theory, wearing tabi socks benefits the back, the spine, and the digestion due to the acupuncture meridians located between the toes.

Trouser Socks - Trouser socks are typically a thinner nylon knee high, perfect for wearing with dress shoes or under work or school attire.
Types of trouser socks Most trouser socks are tube socks ; with no formed heel they can fit a wide range of shoe sizes. They also come in a wide range of styles so they can fit in an equally wide range of looks.
Solid trouser socks The perfect basic for everyday office wear, solid trouser socks come in both sedate and bright options, so they can either blend in with a more formal look or offer a pop of color at the ankle! The Opaque Solid Nylon Trouser Sock from Foot Traffic has over a dozen color options, from basic dark shades to super bright and fun hues.

For a more classic solid trouser sock option, the Trentata Italian Trouser Sock is a soft and stretchy microfiber blend available in the distinctively deep hues we love from B.Ella.

The Fine Knit Cotton Trouser Sock from Cronert not only has a formed heel but is fully-fashioned, meaning it starts out with a leg shape to better hug your curves. Their shape not only makes them unique, but they’re one of the few cotton trouser sock options we’ve seen!
Patterned trouser socks If you’re looking for something with a little more pop, then patterned trouser socks are a gorgeous option. Many patterned styles are also openwork or lighter weight, making them the perfect choice for warmer seasons.

Both Foot Traffic and Nouvella offer printed trouser socks in all-over patterns that range from seasonal to sassy. Because of how they’re printed, the patterns don't always match up perfectly on the sides. It doesn't bother us and probably won't bother you, but be sure to check out our product images to see how little it really shows once they’re on.
Plus size trouser socks If you’ve got a calf circumference of 17 inches or more, don’t worry, we’ve got several plus size trouser socks that are gorgeous and stretchy, fitting full calves and still going nicely high. B.Ella in particular has the styles with the highest stretch , but please email us with your measurements if you would like more help in finding the right trouser sock for you!

Victoriana - Neo-Victorian... Steampunk... Post-apocalyptic... We don't like labels when it comes to fashion, but this is an area we adore, so we couldn't help but round up a few styles that uniquely fit here. Of course, the creative among us can make do with any old thing and turn it into a classic, so these are just suggestions...

Non-Constrictive - Whether it has a rolled cuff, a “comfort top” or a relaxed fit cuff, non-constrictive socks are gentle options for sensitive feet that need a softer touch. If you’re looking for diabetic socks , socks for swollen ankles or just need a more gentle option, we have something for you!
What makes a sock “non-constrictive”? There are several kinds of non-constrictive cuffs, each with its own benefit. A non-constrictive cuff is not significantly tighter than the body of the sock, so it is non-binding and less likely to “cut in” to the leg over the day. This is especially important for people whose ankles tend to swell or who need diabetic socks . Some non-constrictive socks also have minimal elastic in the body of the sock, or woven toe seams , to increase comfort.
Cuff style Many socks you encounter have a ribbed elastic cuff that aide in keeping a sock up and in place. This is particularly common in tall socks, like knee highs and thigh highs . A non-binding cuff does not hold socks up as well as a traditional cuff, so you may need to pair some non-constrictive styles with sock glue if you don’t want them to slouch.

Most non-constrictive socks have either a “ roll-top cuff ” or a “ comfort top cuff ” but there are other non-binding cuff styles to choose from as well!
“Roll top cuff” A roll-top cuff has an unfinished edge that naturally rolls just a little bit. Because the top is made the same way as the body of the sock, it does not squeeze tighter than the sock itself, making it very comfortable.
“Comfort top cuff” Most diabetic socks have what is called a “ comfort top ” style cuff. This cuff looks like a normal ribbed sock cuff, but isn’t tighter than the body of the sock itself. A comfort top cuff is loose, but helps your socks stay in place due to its ribbing, instead of relying on tightness and elastic.
“Raw edge” Don’t worry! A sock with a raw edge cuff won’t unravel! It’s finished, but using the same stitches that make up the rest of the sock, so the comfort and stretch stays the same through the sock from toe to top! You’ll see a raw edge in thigh high stockings that are made to be paired with a garter belt and in slipper socks that are lined with something fuzzy.
Other cuff styles

No matter what cuff style is used, a non-binding cuff won’t be noticeably tighter than the sock itself. Polar fleece socks tend to have a simple hem for a cuff, boot socks are finished with just a little bit of elastic thread, and other socks have combinations of non-binding cuffs.

Non-Elasticized

Non-constrictive socks also tend to be relaxed fit socks , or non-elasticized socks , which mean that it is not just the cuff but the body of the sock itself isn’t tight to your leg. Cotton socks , especially high cotton content socks , will be some of the most non-constrictive.

Just as a non-binding cuff means a sock is more likely to slouch, a non-elasticized sock will also not stay up as well as a sock with a higher elastic content. But when you’re looking for comfort, a sock that is gentle from toe to cuff is what is important!
Other features Speaking of toes, some non-constrictive styles have woven toe seams or minimal toe seams. A non-constrictive sock with a “ seamless toe ” offers the least irritation to sensitive feet.
Which are the best diabetic socks? A diabetic sock has a non-binding cuff, is non-elasticized and often also offers a woven toe. Diabetic socks also often are knit with fibers that help control moisture, like wool or synthetic blends. Most styles that are made to be diabetic socks are also crew socks or midcalf socks , though there are some possible options that are knee socks .

Sockwell offers relaxed fit socks designed with a woven toe seam, a comfortable cuff and light cushioning that are designed especially to be diabetic friendly and perfect for swollen or sensitive feet.

non-constrictive

Tube Style - Tube socks , by definition, do not have formed heels and will fit any length of foot. This simple shape, straight from the top to the seam at the toe, offers lots of leeway for big and little feet alike! Tube socks come in lots of different styles, from terry-lined sports socks to even classic nylon stockings and trouser socks ! Most tights also have a tube-style foot, allowing them to fit a wider range of folks!
Why choose a tube sock? If your feet tend to run smaller or bigger than the average sock, tube socks might a good option. Since they have no shaped heel that defines the “foot” of the sock, the heel is where you make it! Tube socks mean no more heel flopping up on your ankle, or stretched across the arch of your foot.
Things to consider about tube socks It’s important keep in mind is that, since there’s no definition between the foot and the leg of the sock (other than what your own foot gives it), how high a tube sock goes up your leg depends on the length of your foot. An over the knee tube sock may become a thigh high tube sock on a smaller foot, while the same style on a larger foot may only be a knee high tube sock .

Smaller and narrower feet should also consider that, since there’s no defined shape to a tube sock, some feet might find the toe seam too wide to fit in the toes of their shoes. They’ll have more luck with trouser socks and stockings , or other thinner styles, which have less bulk in the first place.

The toe seam on tube socks also runs straight across the end of the toes, so sensitive feet may be irritated. We talk a little more in depth about toe seams in our Sock Journal post, Talkin’ Toe Seams . Luckily, tube sock toe socks have woven toe seams and are a fun tube sock option!

Types of tube socks Though we’ve seen many styles of tube socks over the years, there are a couple of socks we see most often— sport socks , trouser socks , stockings and tights . Each tube sock type has its own benefits.
Sport Socks The classic, terry-lined, tall tube sock is a staple of retro sporty looks. We have several of these athletic tube sock styles in our Dream Stockings collection. Even though their origin is modest, tube socks being the best option when you’re trying to find something that fits everybody on your team, there’s a nostalgic fondness for these top striped tube sock s .

Another thing that makes sporty tube socks popular is their terry lining. The soft terry loops cushion the foot and leg, while also doing a great job softening that sometimes irritating toe seam.
Trouser Socks On the opposite end of the scale, trouser socks are mostly tube socks. These thin, knee high styles are the perfect dress sock, slipping nicely into snugger shoes. Reaching knee high on smaller feet and over the calf on larger feet, tube sock trouser socks go high enough on the leg to add the most professional pattern to that gap between the cuff of your trousers and your dress shoes.
Stockings Most classic nylon or net thigh high stockings are also tube socks; offering either the same sexy pattern from toes to tops for a stocking that looks great in open toe shoes, or a reinforced toe to add a longer life to your favorite styles.

A tube sock stocking means that, no matter how large your foot, there’s a thigh high option out there for you!
Tights Unlike socks, most tights have tube-style feet, mostly due to the tights manufacturing process. The bonus to that means that when you’re looking at tights with different sizes, you only have to worry about finding the size that fits your legs and hips without also having to worry about fitting your foot size too!

From short to tall, to even tights, tube socks are a great option if socks with a formed heel don’t fit.

Woven Toe Seam - Woven toe seams are often more comfortable for sensitive feet.

Argyle - One of the most classic of classic sock designs, these argyle socks are mostly an overlay of inter-crossing diagonal lines on solid diamonds. We've also included patterns that are merely diamonds, but evoke argyle, and others that have a funky twist, like mustaches or circles!

With options that range from traditional argyle to modern interpretations, argyle trouser socks to argyle toe socks and even argyle socks made in the USA, we’ve probably got just the thing to suit your argyle needs!
What exactly is argyle? If you picture argyle socks , you most likely are imagining a field of solid diamonds with an overlapping pattern of criss-crossing lines. Based on the family tartan of Clan Campbell from Argyll in western Scotland, this pattern of diamonds was also reflected in the a Scottish Highlander’s socks and, if you look at paintings of chieftains and soldiers from that era you’ll see argyle socks being represented down through the ages!

Argyle socks are also associated with golf and sport, adding an air of contemporary casualness to these classics of antiquity.

Argyle can range from the intricate, with parti-colored diamonds and a multitude of overlaid lines, to an argyle sock that is a simple pattern of stacked diamonds with almost no lines at all! The complex knitting that goes into making these shapes creates a lot of shorter yarns, meaning argyle can tend to fray. Washing argyle socks inside out can help prevent this and lengthen their life.

Just as argyle is a traditional pattern, they tend to come in mostly traditional sock styles, like knee high argyle socks and midcalf argyle socks . Folks who want to keep it fun can also find argyle toe socks , or check out some argyle sock variations.
Argyle variations Diamonds definitely overlap with argyle, since their distinctive shape is the basis of the pattern. Our argyle category includes some diamond styles that give an impression of a classic argyle sock with only crossed lines, just stacked diamonds, or a variations of argyle with smaller diamond shapes perched behind inter-crossing lines.

Types of tie dye socks Just as our Dream Stockings and Dreamer Socks come in a wide range of fits and styles, our tie dye socks are also available in several options, so you can show off your colors in a multitude of ways!
Tall Tie Dye Socks With our Extraordinary and Dreamer styles as the base, our over the knee and thigh high tie dye socks are an exclusive and unique option, with lots of different patterns, stripes and textures for beautiful mixes of color to wash over.
Tie Dyed Arm and Leg Warmers If you need just a touch of tie dye, then try tie dyed leg warmers, arm warmers or fingerless gloves for a pop of cheerful color! The options for arms in particular are popular with folks who fire dance or spin poi, because of their high cotton content.
And more! We can’t forget knee highs! The perfect middle ground between tall socks and crews, our knee high tie dye socks are just the right amount of bliss.

For the funkiest tie dye socks, try our Tie Dye Tabis ! Split-toe comfort with splashes of classic tie dye colors make these the perfect match to your favorite sandals.

And little feet have tie dye socks too! The Little Dreamer Tie Dye Bamboo Socks come in two sizes. The smallest size is designed for feet of folks aged 2-5and should fit a US kids' shoe size 2-6. The larger size fit kids' shoe sizes 7-3 (up to a US women’s size 4!).
Caring for your tie dye socks Our tie dye socks are safe to wash with your regular laundry! For our cotton styles, we suggest you machine wash with cold or warm water and think it’s best to wash them inside out. For a longer life and better fit, hang your tie dye socks to dry.

The colors are set in such a way that bleeding and fading will be minimal if not non-existent. Tie Dye Eric washes all our tie dyes three times with hot water and super strength detergent during the tie dyeing process to make sure the colors are well set.

This setting process does make tie dye socks a bit more snug than our regular styles, so please keep that in mind.

As with all tie dyed styles, our tie dye socks will not always have the exact patterns as pictured. The images are meant to be representative of each product. In reality, each one will be unique, created by hand with love and precision.

Many of our tie dye socks are also available in an “Assorted” option that lets you take full benefit of the wonderful whim of tie dye by letting us pick what combination of color and pattern you receive! Lined slipper socks

Terry-lined What is a terry-lined sock? Socks constructed with absorbent and cushy terry loops which are often found lining the feet of slipper socks (and athletic socks, too). This extra padding makes them extra warm and snuggly.

Most terry-lined styles can be comfortably worn in a roomy pair of boots, if you just can’t bear to take them off when getting ready for your day. K Bell, Foot Traffic and Hooray Hoopla slipper socks are all thinner, terry-lined options with little grips on the soles.

Why is it called “fishnet”? Though fishnet stockings nowadays are more of a garment worn for looks rather than utility, their origins are in thermal clothing, believe it or not! The stories go that fishermen would drape their nets over themselves and make clothing from them, hence the name “fish net”. This wasn’t just for looks, as these kinds of crocheted “string garments” were worn under clothing to act as a thermal layer, providing a ventilating space of warm air between the body and outer clothing.

Types of fishnet When we talk about types of fishnet stockings or fishnet tights , we are separating them by gauge. A larger gauge fishnet stocking has larger diamonds and shows more skin.

The majority of fishnet stockings are made of a high percentage of nylon or polyamide, blended with a little spandex for stretch.
Fishnet Regular old fishnet stockings can look like tiny, solid socks before you put them on. They have amazing stretch because of their open knit and hug your curves, stretching wider across areas like thighs and calves. Slimmer and shorter legs may find that regular fishnet looks almost opaque at narrower spots of the leg, like the ankles.
Fence net A much wider gauge, fencenet (also written as “ fence net ”) doesn’t highlight the curves of the body as much as regular fishnet stockings. It is beautifully decorative and just as stretchy, if not more, than regular fishnet.
Industrial net Much rarer than fencenet and fishnet stockings is industrial net . Larger gauge than regular fishnet, but smaller than fencenet, industrial net is also thicker. This combo of gauge and sturdiness is what earns them the name “industrial”!
Beyond fishnet You’ll notice that some styles in this category aren’t technically traditional fishnet stockings. If you want more pattern, openwork styles offer looks like lace and nets that go beyond the simple diamond shapes of fishnet.
Crochet look Though they’re often just called “crochet” these styles are actually lace knits or openwork styles that resemble crochet textures. Crochet look stockings and tights often offer more coverage than fishnet stockings and also come in a wider range of fibers, like cotton and wool .
Lace For a delicate touch of pattern, openwork lace styles range from fleur de lis to geometric patterns, providing similar coverage to fishnet stockings but in a wider selection of looks.
Why add half socks? For more sensitive toes, no-show socks and half socks worn under fishnet stockings protect your skin and also prevent the fishnet from leaving a pattern on your feet at the end of the day. Bamboo - Bamboo grows quickly with little need for pesticides or fertilizers, making it easily sustainable. It also creates a soft fiber that is believed to inhibit the growth of bacteria. Bamboo socks and styles are made with either rayon from bamboo or mechanically processed bamboo fiber. Both fiber types offer their own benefits.
Types of bamboo fiber The versatility of bamboo means it can be processed into yarn for bamboo socks in a couple of ways. The majority of bamboo socks are made with rayon from bamboo, but a few styles are made with bamboo yarn.

Both types of bamboo fiber generally offer more environmental benefits, due to the way the bamboo itself is grown and harvested. Growing quickly, with better water efficiency and little to no need for pesticides, bamboo can be an environmentally friendly crop.
Bamboo yarn Un-poetically called “mechanically processed bamboo fiber”, bamboo yarn is made directly from bamboo fiber and can claim the properties that make bamboo socks a favorite. Some properties attributed to bamboo yarn are:
Antibacterial properties keep bamboo socks fresher for longer.
Moisture wicking pulls damp away from your skin, keeping you dry.

Although rayon from bamboo does not retain the same beneficial properties as bamboo yarn, it is loved for the particularly silky qualities that make bamboo rayon socks an indulgent but inexpensive option .

Cashmere - Cashmere goats produce this fine fiber that is strong and warm, creating lightweight and soft cashmere socks that will keep you warm without overheating your feet.
Types of cashmere socks A luxurious wool, cashmere is a regular part of quality wool blends , though there are truly indulgent options made with at least 80% cashmere.
Cashmere wool blends Wool blends mix multiple fibers to create a perfect combination of texture, qualities and comfort. An addition of 10% or less of cashmere blended with sheep’s wool and other fibers imparts some of the lightweight softness of cashmere without the price of a higher content cashmere option.
High content cashmere socks One of the more indulgent options , high content cashmere socks often have at least 60% cashmere, though some higher-end options have more than 80%! Even these cashmere socks have some other fibers blended in, like nylon or Lycra® to reinforce areas of heavy wear, like the toe and heel, to extend their life as luxurious treats for your feet.

B.Ella cashmere B.Ella makes most of the blended cashmere we offer. Masters of mixing wool fibers to their best benefit, most B.Ella cashmere socks are a blend of mostly virgin wool, viscose, nylon with small amounts of cashmere and angora. Creating affordable blended cashmere socks, B.Ella lets more toes taste the indulgence of cashmere.

Qualities of cashmere Though “cashmere” is named after the Kashmir region in northern India, nowadays cashmere is produced in a range of countries known for their wool farming; like Mongolia, Turkey, New Zealand and Australia.

Technically hair, not wool, cashmere fibers are collected when cashmere goats naturally shed their winter undercoats in the spring. From there the fiber is combed and sorted, and turned into usable fiber blends. It can take up to four years to gather enough cashmere to knit a sweater, which is why cashmere goods can be expensive. That makes cashmere socks , even high-end cashmere socks, a great way to indulge in cashmere without breaking the bank.

Cashmere is a fabulous insulator and is very soft and fine. This makes cashmere socks and blended cashmere socks particularly soft, squishy and cozy!
Caring for cashmere We’ve gone over proper wool sock care in our Sock Journal and caring for cashmere and blended cashmere socks is a key part in prolonging their life. Cashmere actually gets softer as it is washed, so proper care techniques not only help your cashmere socks last longer; it makes them even more delightful! The steps are very simple:
Using a detergent or hosiery wash that doesn’t create a lot of bubbles and cool water. Lather and heat plus friction is what causes wool socks to felt.
Wash the wool sock with as little rubbing or friction as possible.
Rinse until the water is clear.
Don’t wring the excess water out of your socks! Instead, press the water out by laying the socks flat on a towel and rolling it up tightly.
Unroll them and move the socks to a fresh, dry towel, gently pressing them back into their proper shape.
Leave them in a warm, dry place and remember to turn them over once they start getting dry, so they dry evenly.

Cotton - Cotton is soft and gentle and easy to take care of, which makes it a favorite for socks! And if you’re looking for cotton socks then you’ve come to the right place because these styles don’t have just a little cotton—all of the cotton socks in this category have at least 70% cotton in them!
High-content cotton socks To make it easier to find the cotton sock you’re looking for, we’ve made two categories for you to use in our Advanced Search . The majority of cotton socks contain 65-85% cotton , but there are still dozens of styles that contain 85-100% cotton !
65-85% cotton socks The plentiful nature of cotton makes it a regular fiber in most clothing, particularly socks. Most cotton socks contain 65-85% cotton and this link brings you right to them! There’s hundreds of cotton socks there, but our Advanced Search options will help you limit the results to the style you’re looking for.

Brands like EG Smith , Foot Traffic , Gumball Poodle and Sock It To Me socks all use a high cotton content blend in their styles. Even B.Ella , who specialises in wool, has cotton styles to choose from! And, of course, the “Sock Lady” Solemate socks uses the easy to dye nature of cotton to its best benefit with distinctively bright colors.

Reclaimed cotton socks
Our Dreamer Socks not only are high in cotton, but use an 85% regenerated cotton/acrylic/polyester blend. What is “regenerated”? It’s really just another term for “recycled.” Regenerated fiber is produced from threads and associated scraps left over from clothing manufacturing. All these little bits are sorted by color, turned back into fiber and spun into fresh new thread!
85-100% cotton socks If you need a higher cotton content, then limiting your search to our 85-100% cotton sock options is the way to go. This link brings you to their section in our Advanced Search. These higher cotton content socks tend to be a little softer and definitely more cottony!

The range of styles available in cotton is fabulous. Cronert’s cotton socks are made with an 85% cotton blend and have a distinctive brushed and luxurious softness. Cotton arm warmers with high cotton content are a favorite for their breathability, keeping you cozy while not letting you get too overly warm. These same qualities make them a favorite for toe socks. Cotton toe socks are particularly great for sports because they dry out fast and are easy to throw in the wash after a workout.
Cotton boot socks Probably the most popular cotton style is the cotton boot sock ! EG Smith, in particular, makes the slouchy, soft and sturdy cotton boot sock that so many people have loved for so many years. In particular, folks love the EG Smith Original Bootsock, made with 98% cotton! After a long time unavailable, this favorite high content cotton sock is back, with a few changes that we go over in our Sock Journal .
Caring for cotton socks Cotton is very easy to care for. Most styles can be washed in the washing machine on cold or medium warm, and dried in the dryer on low. However, every style is different, so be sure to check the tags for washing instructions! As sturdy as cotton is, you want to be careful with cotton socks , especially high cotton content styles, as cotton shrinks easily. Using the dryer on high or washing in hot water can affect the fit of cotton socks.

This quality can be used to your advantage however, by selectively shrinking styles that might be otherwise too baggy or large. Check our Sock Journal entry on blocking for tips!
100% cotton socks Cotton doesn’t have much natural elasticity, something socks need, so there’s no true 100% cotton sock . Our 100% cotton options are all accessories, but if you’re looking for the highest content cotton socks, then drop us a line and we can help you find that right match for you with what styles we have.

Silk - A shimmery natural protein fiber, silk adds a bit of luxurious softness and shine to any fabric. There are a lot of benefits to silk socks : not only are they some of the best liner socks around, but adding a little bit of silk to a wool blend creates a warm and silky sock that offers a chic coziness.
Benefits of silk socks Like all natural animal fibers, silk is a good insulator and great at distributing heat and dampness, making them the perfect liner sock to pair with something warm . It’s also gentle to sensitive skin, making it a great choice for pairing with textures that aren’t to your taste. Though very fine, silk is an incredibly strong fiber, however exposure to sunlight can weaken it. For this reason we suggest line-drying your silk and silk blended socks indoors, to avoid direct sunlight.

One thing to remember about silk socks with 60% or higher silk is that their stretch isn’t always as great as options with synthetic fiber. To make up for this silk socks often come in sized options. So be sure to read the Sizing Tips for the silk socks you’re looking at, to be sure that they’ll work for you.
Silk socks As luxurious as it may seem today, silk was a traditional fiber used to make socks and stockings for a very long time. It was, of course, still an expensive fiber, so the world rejoiced with DuPont created nylon and nylon stockings as an affordable alternative to silk socks . The introduction of synthetic fibers offered silky socks to the masses, but if you’re looking for actual silk socks and silk stockings, the search can be a little more difficult. There aren’t many companies out there that still produce silk socks, so we don’t always have high silk content options available. But we do love the feel of real silk socks, so keep an eye on this category for new additions.
Wool and silk socks Blending wool and silk has the almost alchemic result of creating a sock that is pure gold. Wool and silk socks are a balance of the sturdiness of silk with the softness of wool, combining both of their fabulously insulating properties into one perfect option.

Our wool and silk sock styles are thick without being suffocating, and surprisingly sturdy for the lush fibers they use. There’s nothing that really describes the particular softness and well, silkiness , of a wool and silk sock.
Alternatives to silk If you want a silky sock but can’t find a real silk option (or don’t want a real silk option) then viscose , rayon and bamboo rayon are good alternatives to silk socks . Nylon, that original standby for silk, is used too, but both viscose and rayon maintain more of the silky qualities.
Viscose and Rayon Both viscose and rayon are used almost interchangeably in place of silk. When you look at socks that use viscose and rayon you’ll find a lot of them using these silky synthetics in wool blends for the same benefits found in wool and silk socks.

If you want more of a silky indulgence, M. Rena’s leggings use modal rayon and viscose for a soft, silky and stretchy legging with surprising opacity.

There are lots of silky socks that go knee high and over the knee too, they’re particularly fabulous for transitional seasons like autumn and spring, because they insulate and breathe well for synthetic fiber options!
Bamboo Rayon Because of its quick growth and easy processing, bamboo is a popular choice to turn into rayon. And, although rayon from bamboo does not retain the same beneficial properties as bamboo yarn, it makes for silky socks and blends with wools well, making it an affordable indulgence .

Even if you can’t find a silk sock that suits your needs for now, there are several silky sock options available to keep your toes indulged until new styles are available!

Wool - Wool socks are wonderful for keeping cozy, but did you know their moisture wicking and thermal properties also make them great for warm weather? Of course, most folks still turn to a warm wool sock when the temperatures drop. There are many wool fiber options to choose from, including luxury fibers like alpaca , cashmere , angora , and merino . But with even your less luxe wool blend socks you need to be sure to wash them gently, according to their washing instructions.
Types of Wool Fibers Most wool socks are a mix of multiple fibers, blending luxury wool with sturdy fiber to increase their durability and comfort. Each kind of wool fiber has its own wonderful benefits to share with you!
Alpaca Technically called “fleece”, alpaca wool socks and styles are often technical socks , utilising the unique moisture wicking and thermal properties of alpaca fiber. Strong and lightweight, alpaca keeps you warm even when it is wet, which is why Dahlgren uses alpaca fiber in their hiking socks and running socks. Alpaca socks are also superb at keeping you warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
Angora The soft and silky, unique hollow fibers in angora wool socks and styles make them luxuriously cozy and warm. The thermal wool of angora is ideal for folks who suffer from arthritis or are sensitive to the cold. Angora fiber can only be produced by Angora rabbits (Angora goats produce mohair) and grooming their fur is a necessary part of their health care.

Cashmere Also not technically a wool, but included in the most high end wool socks , Cashmere is obtained from cashmere goats and is fine in texture, strong and soft. Our cashmere wool socks are perfect blends of wool with cashmere, designed to keep you warm without overheating.
Merino A specific kind of sheep wool , prized for its combination of sturdiness and softness, merino wool socks range from technical socks and athletic socks to fine dress socks . We carry several brands that utilise merino to the max!
B.Ella utilises the fine quality and reliable strength of merino wool to create made in the USA styles that keep you warm and stylish.

Washing wool socks To get the most life out of a wool sock , you need to wash it with care! Be sure to read the product’s label to learn the best way to wash them. Most of the wool socks and styles we carry recommend machine washing cold on the gentle cycle and lying flat to dry. Though easy to care for wool socks are wonderful, for a longer life and less pilling, hand washing your wool is the best option.

Ways to keep warm There are a couple of different options for keeping warm, what works best for you will vary depending on how cold it may get where you live and what you’re more comfortable wearing. Warm socks aren’t always the thickest socks, certain types of fibers or styles of socks and tights work better than others.

Wool socks are often the first option for warm socks, but if you can’t wear wool then fleece socks and fleece-lined styles are a great option! And you’d be surprised at how great terry lined socks and other textures do when you’re needing warm sock options!
Wool Tried and true through the ages, wool socks are often synonymous with warm socks . We have a lot of wool options in our Wool category , but there are several styles that we love the best when it comes to keeping warm.

Start with your toes

If you’re dealing with really cold temps, then before you put on warm socks you might want to try adding the Alpaca Felt Insoles , made in the USA by Heartfelt. They’re super warm alpaca wool felted onto burlap for sturdiness, made to slip into your shoes and curl just a bit up the sides, adding an insulating layer between your feet and the cold world.

Layer!

The best way to keep warm is by layering. Layering traps warm air (kind of like a thermos!) and helps keep you toasty. Pair your warm socks with tights or leggings under pants or a long skirt for truly cold temperatures, or layer two pairs of thinner warm socks for more coziness than a single pair of thick socks can provide on their own!
Fleece and fleece-lined Using the idea of trapping air to keep you warm, fleece and fleece-lined styles are an amazing warm sock option, especially layered! No matter what kind of fleece (or “fleece”) you go for, it’s a great option for keeping warm, especially for folks who don’t wear wool.

Polar Fleece

Polar fleece was designed to mimic the insulating properties of natural fleece (the wooly coat of sheep and other fiber animals), which it does—right down to retaining its insulating (read: warm-making) powers when wet.

Like any dense synthetic fabric, it doesn’t breathe well and wearing a thin silk, bamboo or Coolmax® sock underneath can help deal with moisture.

Fleece-Lined

Thick, nicely opaque and super-insulating, fleece lined leggings , tights (and even knee highs !) seem to be the most popular warm layer. Their claim to “fleece” comes from the fuzzy inner layer that traps air to keep you warm and insulated from cold. As they’re also fully synthetic fiber, folks who need a little more breathing room may need to stay away from the tights and go the leggings or knee high route.
Terry and Textured
Using the same principles of trapping air to keep you warm, terry-lined socks and textured styles are great warm socks , and offer options for folks who can’t wear wool socks.

“ Boucle ” (or, more properly, “bouclé”) is both a yarn and the fabric made from that yarn. Strands are wound together in a way that makes that distinctive loopy appearance. Fabric knit from bouclé yarn has a squishy thickness to it that indicates its lovely insulating properties.

Terrycloth (called “terry” for short and “French terry” if knit) is a fabric knit to be flat on one side, with lots of loops on the other. Those little loops trap air just like a bouclé fabric (though maybe not as efficiently). They also add a thickness too that ups the warmth factor. Lightweight - Lightweight styles for when you've got to cover up but don't need to warm up.

Scrunchy Socks - These styles are perfect when you want socks that are loose & baggy, long & slouchable, and oh-so-comfy!

Sheer To Waist - "Sheer-to-waist" tights aren't always sheer, but they are uninterrupted, all the way up to the waist band. Since they don't have "boyshort" tops or reinforcing thigh bands, these styles are perfect for wear with the shortest of skirts and shorts!

Hand Made and Altered - Tie dyed, screen printed and embellished by hand, or made from scratch in small studios. We love these styles and the effort and skill used to produce them.

The Sock It To Me Story Started in 2004, Sock It To Me socks were inspired by the fun sock designs their founder, Carrie Atkinson, saw when she was teaching English in Korea. Starting as a big idea in a small bedroom office, Sock It To Me keeps growing, bringing fun socks everywhere they can, even to grocery stores and Portland’s famous Powell’s Books!

Sock Dreams and Sock It To Me have worked together for a long time, so long that sometimes people even get our names confused! Though we’re two very different businesses, the big thing we have in common is our love of socks and our desire to offer cool socks to everyone. Types of socks Back in the early days, Sock It To Me socks were only available in a couple dozen styles and just as knee socks and midcalves (though there were also a few anklets from time to time!). Now they have more styles than we can count and in sizes for everybody! The Sock It To Me styles that Sock Dreams curates are a mix of fits, heights and patterns that range from the newest favorites to long-loved classics.
Knee High Socks The most distinctive of Sock It To Me socks, their knee high socks offer more space for those funky fresh designs that are their trademark. With everything from cute animals to nerdy indulgences , there’s something for whatever you’re looking for, whether it’s a gift for a friend or a treat for yourself!
Plus Size Socks The "Stretch-It™" styles boast calf stretch of up to 21 inches while still having enough length to be a true knee high! Ever since they introduced this roomier, comfier fit, they've been upgrading their popular favorites to Stretch-It™, so that more folks can rock their socks!
Midcalf Socks In the same vein, Sock It To Me offers “ men’s socks ” sized midcalf styles as an option for larger feet that don’t fit the US women’s shoe size 6-11 (men’s shoe size 4-9) that most of their styles are offered in. Not only do several of their midcalf socks have matching knee highs , for when you want the ultimate in couple cuteness, but we’ve found they can fit a little smaller than their men's US shoe sizes 8-11 (women’s shoe size 9-13) range—meaning that designs unique to the larger footed midcalves are still an option for a women’s shoe size 8!
Crew Socks Littler feet that want short socks shouldn’t worry though, Sock It To Me also has crew socks that fit a smaller range and are a little bit shorter than their midcalves. Even though there’s less space to work with, they still manage to pack as much fun and design into these little socks as they do their knee highs!
Ankle Socks Skimming just below the ankle bone, Sock It To Me’s anklet socks have some of the same playful patterns as their taller cousins, but in a petite length available in both smaller and larger adult sizes. They’re just the right height to add a little bit of fun even when it’s too warm for taller socks!
Kid’s Socks But adult sized feet aren’t the only ones that benefit from Sock It To Me socks , who have lots of kids socks and baby socks too! Their kid socks come in two sizes! The little kid sizes are designed for feet of folks aged 3-6 and are about 5 inches long from toe to heel, fitting shoe shoe size 8-13. The big kid sizes are designed feet of folks aged 7-10, they are about 6 inches long from toe to heel, fitting kids shoe size 1-5.
